Achilles is dedicated to
running as a vehicle for positive social and individual change- why?
Running is
healthy Moderate running tends to enhance the health of both adults and youngsters and some Achilles members
feel that running has slowed or reversed the degenerative aspects of their
disability.

Running
improves self-perception People with disabilities
who felt they could not accomplish what others do, experience
success.
Running is
accessible More people worldwide
have access to running than any other athletic activity.
Running
is inexpensive Running can be initiated
with a minimum of training and equipment, and consequently, it is
comparatively inexpensive.
Running
breaks down barriers Running brings together
the more able-bodied with the disabled, "mainstreaming" and demonstrating
the potential for re-integrating the disabled with everyone
else.
Running is
inspirational Running inspires and
builds confidence among participants, volunteers, and observers. It is a
readily measurable activity allowing incremental success that leads
participants to accomplish the "impossible".
Running is a
life-long activity People with disabilities
in our programs often begin to run before they are ten and we have seniors
running well into their eighties.
